Kathryn and Dan Shipman returned from China in February 1999. They spent three years living in Tianjin, China, while Dan was working for Bechtel China. During this period Kathryn developed contacts and spent many days shopping in Beijing and Tianjin.

Kathryn had visualized Turning East in 1996 while we were living in Tianjin, PRC. China has an enormous assortment of Ming style furniture with many of the available pieces manufactured during the following Qing Dynasty. The furniture in our selection is Ming style antiques that were manufactured to the exacting dimensions and carpentry techniques as the original pieces. The furniture was inspected by Turning East during manufacturing by our China representatives. We are confident that these pieces will add lasting beauty to your home or office.

Turning East is one of a few direct importers of Chinese furniture in Northern California. Turning East may be the only direct importer in the foothills of the Sierras. This provides a tremendous cost advantage to our customers. The pieces will often be 50% of the price found in other shops where they are purchased on the secondary market. Our goal is to make a fair profit while providing our customers with a unique selection of affordable merchandise.
